What is the hardest trick to do in figure skating? ›

There is one called the "quad Axel," or "4A," that is widely considered to be the hardest jump in figure skating. By difficulty, there are six types of jumps in figure skating: the toe loop, the loop, the salchow, the flip, the lutz and the Axel.

The conservation of angular momentum explains why ice skaters start to spin faster when they suddenly draw their arms inward, or why divers or gymnasts who decrease their moment of inertia by going into the tuck position start to flip or twist at a faster rate.

This explains why a figure skater spins faster when she tucks her arms in close to her body. When she begins spinning with her arms away from her body, she has a large moment of inertia because more of her mass is farther away from her axis of movement (her body).

Many professional trainers consider the spinner a very useful tool to improve your skills and to allow you to learn new techniques: for this reason, in the case of figure skating, for example, it will be one of the first tools that they will advise you to buy together with the your basic equipment.

The Quadruple Axel is considered the most difficult ice skating move. It involves four and a half rotations in the air while taking off from the back outer edge of one foot and landing on the back outer edge of the opposite foot.

For example, when the skater extends her arms outwards, increasing twofold the moment of inertia, the velocity of her spin also decreases twofold. While tucking her arms in, she decreases the moment of inertia significantly and thus gains high rotational velocity.

Its the concept of Moment of Inertia. In case you are just looking for a qualitative answer : The limbs of the ballerina are pulled outwards by the centripetal force she experiences by spinning. When she pulls her arms in, she is doing work by more than counteracting this force and this is what makes her spin faster.

How do figure skaters spin without getting dizzy? ›

Skaters are trained to develop a high level of spatial awareness and balance, which helps them to mitigate the effects of dizziness or vertigo when performing spins on the ice.

When our head rotation triggers this automatic, repetitive eye movement, called nystagmus, we get dizzy. Skaters suppress the dizziness by learning how to counteract nystagmus with another type of eye movement, called optokinetic nystagmus.

The Edea spinner can be used on any compact, flat and dry surface: usually smooth concrete or tiled tracks are preferred. Use on parquet should be avoided, as it is possible to damage the surface.

And the reason why you can't overboot in Edea, is because all of the flex in all Edea boots, comes from the tongue. So you're flexing from the ankle. There is no side to side (lateral bend) like you can't bend these boots from side to side. So, you really can't overboot with Edea.
